Understanding your devices:
Intrauterine devices or IUDs can be either hormonal such as the Mirena and Kyleena or non -hormonal which includes the Copper coil. Both IUDs and the Implanon (commonly known as the ‘bar’ ) are forms of long-acting-reversible contraception meaning they last for three or more years depending on the device and the effects of them can be easily reversed upon simple removal.
Women are preferencing these forms of contraception as they remove the need to remember a daily pill and are more reliable as a form of birth control as a result.
Hormonal IUD: Mirena and Kyleena
The Mirena and Kyleena are T- shaperd hormonal IUDs that are inserted into the uterus. They release a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, which works by thinning the lining of the womb, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and sometimes preventing ovulation. These devices are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, with an efficacy rate of over 99%. In addition to its use in birth control, the Mirena can also be used to manage heavy menstrual bleeding, reduce menstrual pain, and serve as an adjunct in menopausal hormone therapy.
Copper IUD (non hormonal)
The copper IUD is a small contraceptive device placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It works by releasing tiny amounts of copper, which create an environment that is toxic to sperm, stopping them from fertilising an egg. The copper IUD is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and can also be used as emergency contraception if inserted within five days of unprotected sex.
The Implanon is a small, flexible rod that is inserted just under the skin of the upper arm to protect against pregnancy . It releases a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. It works by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the uterine lining to reduce the chance of implantation. The Implanon is over 99% effective and provides up to three years of continuous protection against pregnancy.
